As promised, here are my slides and the code for the “Nepali Date” block I created for my session “Your first Gutenberg Block”.

Here’s the code for the block javascript file:

The slides:

<iframe src="https://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/key/8rMqoyIHJ7jT9u" width="510" height="420"frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"style="border: var(--border-1) solid #CCC; border-width:1px; margin-bottom:5px; max-width:100%;"allowfullscreen>

A couple of days later, during contributor day, I was joined by several amazing WordPress (and GlotPress) contributors, and we firmed the proposal which is now up on trac.

Right To Left in WordPress – The Right Way

Here’s the short talk I gave about languages written from right-to-left at WordCamp Europe 2017. I’m visibly nervous — this was the largest crowd I’ve ever presented to.

The slides:

<iframe src="https://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/key/HbUESFo4tnIH1p" width="510" height="420"frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"style="border: var(--border-1) solid #CCC; border-width:1px; margin-bottom:5px; max-width:100%;"allowfullscreen>

While the slides make it clear that I go from talking about
rtl.css
— the file, used in WordPress themes, to RTLCSS — the node module, I realize that it’s somewhat hard to understand when watching the video. Sorry about that!

WP-CLI live presentation, like a pro

I recently gave a talk about WP-CLI at WordCamp Israel 2016. I thought it would be interesting to actually demo WP-CLI in real time, rather than use boring slides.

I used OS X split screen mode, with a terminal window on one side, and a browser on the other showing the site I’m creating and editing:

The tricky part was to not have to type the commands I wanted to demo (which would be boring, and slow). Luckily, I’ve found doitlive, which takes a bash script and types the commands in a simulated window.

Localization: beyond translation, WC Europe 2015

WordCamp Europe 2015 was a superb event, and I’m happy I was able to present. In this talk, I’ve tried to focus on things that are sometimes overlooked when dealing with localization and internationalization.

Really excited about today’s launch of our new front-end translation tool for WordPress.com.

It happened after I saw a thread in a Facebook group about an issue with WordPress 3.8.
Turns out this was a bug I was responsible for (doh!), but instead of just fixing it, I offered to tutor anyone interested in how to create a bug report and write their first patch.

Ice Cream Sandwich on the Nexus S

I’ve been running Alpha 11 of CyanogenMod 9 (Android 4.0/ICS) on my Nexus S for the past few days and all I can say is wow.
While you’re at it, get the awesome new 2.0 beta of WordPress for Android.

WordCamp Jerusalem

I’m really excited to be giving a talk at WordCamp Jerusalem in a couple of weeks – the third Israeli WordCamp and the first in Jerusalem.

My talk will be an in-depth overview of WordPress i18n and RTL – a topic I already addressed in a quick 7 minutes presentation at WordCamp SF 2010.
